Our Employees Rock!
SBCUSD is celebrating our exemplary employees next week in honor of Classified School Employee Week, which is Sunday, May 15 through Saturday, May 21. Please remember to say thank you to our deserving classified employees (i.e. aides, custodians, secretaries, tutors) and show your appreciation. SBCUSD scholars and parents can upload a special message or photo to social media to support and honor SBCUSD classified staff. Be sure to use the hashtag #ExemplarySBCUSDEmployees.

We encourage SBCUSD scholars, families, and staff to promote Classified School Employee Week by wearing blue on Tuesday, May 17.

Celebrating and Appreciating Our Workforce

Congratulations to our Golden and Crystal Apple winners, who were honored on May 10 during the Board of Education’s Employee Appreciation reception. The Board of Education hosts this annual event to honor and thank the entire SBCUSD workforce and honor employees who are celebrating a career milestone.

You can watch the 2022 Employee Appreciation Reception here. District employees who passed away during the last year were honored during an in memoriam video tribute played during the special Board meeting. You can watch the tributes starting at the 1:10:05 mark.

And look in upcoming editions of this newsletter for a closer look at the employees who received a 2022 Crystal Apple or Golden Apple Award for their impactful work with our students. Their stories will run in a section we are calling Awesome to the Core.

Home Test Kit Expiration Update
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) endorses the emergency use of over-the-counter COVID-19 tests beyond their FDA-authorized expiration. District staff and families may continue using the at-home COVID-19 test kits that our schools are distributing to all students.

California Green Ribbon School
Kudos to Norton Elementary School for earning a California Green Ribbon School award from the California Department of Education. State Superintendent Tony Thurmond recognized the honorees for maintaining sustainable practices and environmental education through the unprecedented challenges created by the global pandemic.

Drumline—Silver and Gold!
Let’s hear it for the members of the Chavez Middle School and the SB Indoor Percussion team. Both groups competed in the ADLA Championships at Cal State Fullerton on April 30, 2022, under the direction of Paul Locke, Secondary Education Program Specialist. Chavez took the gold in the Scholastic Junior High Division and SB Indoor Percussion took silver in the Scholastic A Division.
In the Spotlight

Classified School Employee Week is Here!
With National Teacher Appreciation Week behind us, we’re turning our attention to the classified employees who may not teach but still impact the lives of our students as much as our educators.
In California, May 15–21 is Classified School Employee Week. Our SBCUSD classified employees keep our schools and offices running efficiently and clean, they serve nutritious meals to our more than 46,000 students, and assist our teachers in the classroom. Like teachers, our more than 2,480 classified employees are essential.

Whether online during distance learning or behind the scenes, our classified employees help our teachers, administrators, students, and schools thrive. Please take a moment this coming week to celebrate the many contributions of the employees who work in support roles. And look to our social media for other opportunities to recognize the dedication of our classified workers.

Here’s a closer look at some of the SBCUSD classified employees who make hope happen for the children of this community and represent the high-caliber of staff members who make SBCUSD special:

Linda Martin
Instructional Tutor
Muscoy Elementary School

As one of San Bernardino City Unified’s longest-serving employees, Linda Martin has impacted the lives of countless children. She has worked almost five decades at Muscoy Elementary School, where she comes to school every day with a smile on her face. She has built many relationships with staff and students over her years of service. Linda is consistent and dependable. The smile on her face and the children's faces, when she is working with them, is evidence of the love she has for our students.

Her impact on the students and the Muscoy community is undeniable and beyond measure.  Thank you, Ms. Martin, for your 48 years of service to the San Bernardino City Unified School District.

Tobias Gilpin
Recreation Aide
Henry Elementary School

Tobias has been a recreational aide with SBCUSD for five years. He enjoys working at Henry Elementary, where he focuses on helping students by building strong relationships on the playground. Through social emotional learning, he builds connections with students and helps them feel safe in school. His personal philosophy is to be selfless, not selfish, talk without bad intentions, give without any reason and most of all, care for people without any exception! The Board of Education recently honored Tobias with a Golden Apple Award. This award is like our in-house Oscars for our SBCUSD educators, and that’s why we reserve this honor for just two employees and two managers each year.

Maria Elena Soto
Education Assistant III (Spanish)
San Gorgonio High School

Maria Elena Soto has dedicated 44 years of her life to her career in education. In these 44 years, she has worked in the classroom as an educational assistant, a position she values and is dedicated to. She has made a significant impact on the life of her students’ academic achievements. Maria Elena has played an important role in the language development of many students, including Spartan teachers who had the privilege to have had her as their educational assistant during their high school years. Her hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed.
