Future in Focus
Quick tips, brief updates, and reminders about what’s coming up to help families, employees, and our community make the most of our schools.

Special Board Meeting on Mask Mandates
The Board of Education is scheduled to hold a special meeting on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, to reconsider the District’s mask mandate.

District administration is aware that on Friday, February 25, 2022, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued new guidance for mask-wearing requirements based on local conditions. The CDC announcement included a recommendation to relax mask requirements in schools. On the heels of the CDC update, Governor Gavin Newsom announced a plan to lift the mask mandate in California schools after March 11, 2022. In his announcement, the Governor also made room for local jurisdictions to continue requiring masks based on local conditions and gave us time to get input from you and other members of our school community on how best to proceed in our schools.

We encourage you to complete the single-question survey sent out March 2, 2022, via ParentSquare to have your voice heard. You can access the English-language ParentSquare survey here. You must be logged in to ParentSquare, and you will only be able to complete the survey once.

Performing Arts Showcase
The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, along with the California Arts Project, is hosting the annual Celebration of the Performing Arts Showcase on Tuesday, March 8, 2022.  San Bernardino High School will participate in one performance during the event.  The showcase will take place at the California Theatre, 562 W. 4th Street, San Bernardino. The performance is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and admission is free.

Virtual Student Mental Health Event
The California Department of Education (CDE) and its partners are presenting the 2nd Annual Mind Out Loud (MOL) Virtual Student Mental Health Event on Saturday, March 12, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free, virtual event offers students and families a chance to gain practical tools for mental health advocacy and suicide prevention. To learn more or register for the free, virtual event, visit https://www.mindoutloud.org.

Schools of Choice
SBCUSD believes families should have input in their child’s education, and that includes what school your child attends. If your child is currently enrolled at an SBCUSD school, you can apply now for a change of school for the 2022–23 school year. The deadline to apply is March 15, 2022. Families will be notified by email in mid to late June if their request is approved. Richardson PREP HI, Rodriguez PREP Academy, and Chavez Middle Schools are part of the middle school lottery program, and are not eligible for transfer under the Schools of Choice program.

School Calendar Survey
SBCUSD needs your input for the 2023–24 and 2024–25 school year calendars. The Calendar Committee will review the results and provide a recommendation to the Board of Education. Please complete this survey now through April 8, 2022.
