Putting the Pause on COVID Group Testing
Last week we shared information about moving to a Group Testing procedure Districtwide based on new guidance from the California Department of Public Health and San Bernardino County Department of Public Health. We requested and learned this week that we have more time to work through the planning around this issue than we were originally told.
Therefore, after careful thought and consideration, we are putting a pause on the Group Testing program to allow for more stakeholders, including our Board of Education, to discuss the proposed, new procedure. We will keep any Opt-Out forms we have already received, and there is no need for parents/guardians to do anything further at this time. When we know more, we will communicate with you as early as possible.
As always, our goal is to keep our students, staff, and families safe with the lowest degree of disruption to the educational experience. We appreciate your understanding and grace as we work through this new guidance.

Superintendent’s Parent Advisory Meeting

is launching a brand-new parent advisory team, which will bring together parents from every District school site to provide him with feedback and insight on our schools and District. The first meeting is Monday, January
31, 4:30–6 p.m. Participating parents should have received a letter with the Zoom meeting link.
COVID-19 Vaccine Event
San Bernardino High School, 1850 North E Street in San Bernardino, is offering a COVID-19 vaccine clinic on Wednesday, February 2, 3–6 p.m. that offers:
- COVID-19 vaccine first dose
- COVID-19 vaccine second dose
- COVID-19 vaccine third dose (immunocompromised)
- COVID-19 vaccine booster
- Flu shots
This event is free and available to anyone who is interested and vaccine eligible. A parent/guardian must be present for children ages 5–17 to receive the vaccine. Booster doses are only available to ages 12 and
up. Register online. Walk-ins are also welcome.
DELAC Meeting
The District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) is meeting Friday, February 4, 9–11:30 a.m.

SAT: Reach for Your Potential
SAT School Day 2022 is on March 2, and SBCUSD will be providing the opportunity for select juniors to take
the SAT exam at their school during a school day at no cost. High school juniors should contact their high school for more information.

District Middle School Honor Orchestra and High School Honor Band Are All That Jazz
Congratulations to the Middle School Honor Orchestra for being
selected to perform in the 2022 San Bernardino County Honor Orchestra! This is the most middle school students SBCUSD has had in all-county since 2018!
And, three cheers for the High School Honor Orchestra for being selected for the 2022 San Bernardino County Honor Orchestra!
Arroyo Valley High’s Keith Brockie Has Teaching Down to a Fine Art
It’s official! Arroyo Valley High art demonstration teacher Keith Brockie is the California League of High Schools (CLHS) 2022 Educator of the Year for Region 10. Keith will represent Region 10 (Riverside/San Bernardino
County) at the CLHS Annual Conference in March 2022, and is in the running to be the statewide CLHS Educator of the Year.
The Educator of the Year award is given annually to 10 educators, representing regions throughout California, who exemplify educational excellence and have made significant efforts to implement elements of educational reform
in high schools. Congratulations, Keith!
Free COVID-19 Tests
Did you know that every home in the U.S. is eligible to order four free at-home COVID- 19 tests?
The tests available for order are rapid antigen at-home tests and provide results within 30 minutes (no lab drop-off required). You can take an at-home test anywhere whether you have COVID- 19 symptoms or not.
You should take an at-home test if you begin having COVID-19 symptoms like fever, sore throat, runny nose, or loss of taste or smell, when you’re going to gather with a group of people, especially those who are at risk
of severe disease or may not be up to date on their COVID-19 vaccines, or at least 5 days after you come into close contact with someone with COVID-19.

Candidates Can Now Apply for a Temporary Seat on the SBCUSD Board of Education
The Board of Education of the San Bernardino City Unified School District
voted on Tuesday, January 25 to fill a vacancy on the governing body through a temporary appointment, foregoing a costly special election.
Those vying for the provisional seat can begin applying today, and must be 18 years of age or older, live within the District’s attendance boundaries, be registered to vote in San Bernardino County, and submit a completed application
by the February 2 deadline. The Board will conduct candidate interviews on February 8 and then announce its selection on February 15. The appointed Board of Education member will fill a seat vacated with the December 2021 passing of
community icon and longtime SBCUSD administrator and trustee Dr. Margaret Hill.
Candidate applications will be available on the District’s website, www.sbcusd.com/applyforboe beginning Wednesday, January 26, and closing Wednesday,
February 2, 2022.
The appointed trustee will serve from February 15, 2022, through mid December 2022. Candidates interested in being elected to serve the remainder of the term, which ends December 2024, would need to run for the permanent seat through
the formal elections process and be elected by voters.
The seven-member Board of Education provides direction for operating the District through actions taken at its meetings. Board members develop the policies by which the educational programs and other business of the District are carried
out. Regular meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
SBCUSD is California’s seventh-largest school district, serving more than 46,000 students in the cities of San Bernardino and Highland and unincorporated communities of Muscoy and Devore. SBCUSD has one of the largest workforces
in San Bernardino County, with more than 8,000 teachers and classified employees and over 70 campuses.
